Without a reliable and adequate means of earning a living, even hard-working families are more vulnerable to stresses such as conflict, an earthquake or a drought. When such incidents occur again and again, it becomes even more difficult for them to earn a living or get out of debt.

Poverty is a cycle, but it isn’t unbreakable. Growth is a cycle too, and by creating sustainable livelihoods in impoverished communities, people can prosper for many years to come, Insha’Allah.

Through sustainable livelihoods projects, Islamic Relief is able to help the individuals acquire the skills they need to develop a reliable means of earning income. We’re helping families get the basics they need to survive—we’re helping communities prosper by boosting the local economy and by creating jobs.

When your one donation is recycled to help family after family, earning livelihoods for years to come, this is a form of Sadaqah Jariyah, or ongoing charity. The Prophet, peace be upon him, said: “When a person dies, his deeds come to an end except three: a continuing charity…” (Muslim).

Give and the reward could outlive you.

For your convenience, Islamic Relief Australia has answered frequently asked questions about Livelihoods.

What kind of livelihoods projects will Islamic Relief do?
In the past, we’ve trained single mothers in Indonesia in farming, packaging and selling mushrooms in the market, and provided them with the support to continue their business year after year, enabling them to live in dignity and security and provide for their children. We’ve worked with returned refugees in Myanmar, assisting them in innovative and climate-adaptive agriculture techniques and production, enabling them to achieve a sustainable income and put down roots in their new communities.

In the future, we’ll continue to fund projects that seek to create long-term change, with a special focus on South East Asia and climate change adaptation.

How can I find out how my support was used?
A donation to our livelihood fund enables us the flexibility to fund whichever livelihood project is most important or needy at the time.

For that reason we can’t say exactly which livelihood project your funds will be used for in advance- but keep an eye on our social media or in our annual report for information about our livelihood projects and you can be sure your donation supported one of them.
