We’re proud to announce that our Fundraising & Community Relations Officer, Abdul Samim Khan, recently received a Local Legends Award for his outstanding contributions to his local community in Queensland. Abdul Samim established the Logan Roos Football Club in 2017 to help migrant and refugee children build friendships and develop social skills through sports.
When Abdul Samim established the club, his main aim was to keep youth out of trouble and off the streets. “There are many kids with natural skills and if they are looked after and nurtured properly they can become great players and build a career, and in return they can give back to the community,” Abdul Samim says.
Over the years, the club has become more than just a sports venue – it is also a place where families from migrant and refugee backgrounds gather to socialise and find familiarity in their new home.
“It has become a family hub for them where they meet and greet each other and have coffee, tea and snacks together. During Ramadan, they all bring their cultural food and have breakfast together during training. It is not a club only, it’s a home away from home,” he says.

During this year’s Australia Day celebrations, Abdul Samim was presented the award by Jim Chalmers MP, who said:
“As your Federal Member, I am frequently amazed by the selfless acts which help make ours a community which looks out for each other and looks after each other and by people who enhance our quality of life by dedicating their skills, enthusiasm and energy in a diverse range of causes right around our electorate.”
