As communities come together to celebrate the end of Ramadan with prayer, feasts and charity, for Islamic Relief Worldwide, Eid-al-Fitr marks the end of a successful distribution campaign. Approximately 1.5 million vulnerable families across 31 countries benefitted from 200,000 food packs.
With the aim of uniting communities through sharing the joys and blessings of Ramadan, we achieved exactly that this year. Ramadan, Zakat-at-Fitr and Eid-al-Fitr distributions took place across the globe, from domestic programmes in the United States of America to ensuring food-security for marginalised people in Afghanistan.
Across the world, we organised Iftars and events that brought people closer together. Children received Eid gifts in Malawi and India, and orphans in Bosnia and Lebanon celebrated Ramadan with fun-filled Iftars; we even held a communal Iftar for refugees in Italy. In South Africa, we teamed up with the Operation Open Hearts motorcycle club to distribute Eid-al-Fitr hampers to impoverished communities, and in the United Kingdom, the #Cakes4Syria campaign continued into its fourth year.
This Ramadan was also a year of firsts, with our Philippines field office taking part in their first Ramadan project since being established in 2013, and our Malaysia office introducing Kembara Saham Akhirat – a Ramadan Relief Road Tour.
All donations to General Sadaqah are spent in accordance with the Islamic Relief objectives and to support our mission. We are working together for a world free of poverty.
