Today marks the day of Ashura, which is the 10th day of Muharram –  the first month in the Islamic calendar. It is important because it commemorates the day that Allah (SWT) split the red sea to save Prophet Musa (AS) and the Children of Israel from Pharaoh.

When Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) spoke about this day, he said:

‘This is a great day when Allah saved Musa and his people and drowned Pharaoh and his people.’ (Sahih Muslim)

While fasting is not compulsory on the day of Ashura, it is encouraged for the immense blessings and benefits it brings:

“I seek from Allah that fasting on the day of Arafah may atone for the sins of the preceding and the coming years, and I seek from Allah that fasting on the day of Ashura may atone for the sins of the preceding year.”- Narrated by Abu Qatadah (Sahih Muslim)
